Personally, I don't really think PNG men are the violent type. I think it's just our melanesian culture and upbringing. I mean if you think about it, almost all ethnic societies (excluding matrilineal societies) in PNG view men as more superior than women. You know, that men are more important and have more worth than women. I come from the Highlands, and I see this happening everywhere in the Highlands. Because of this culture of ours puting men on pedestals, I think men want to emphasize and remphasize the fact that they are more important throught domestic violence, rape, harressment, and the list goes on.
But that doesn't go to mean that I'm against our culture. No, on the contrary, I'm proud to be Melanesian. It's a part of who we are. I'd also like to add that not all PNG men are violent types...we do have our fair share of gentlement. It's only those minority that spoil the name of PNG men and paint a bad picture of our men to the world at large.
So all in all, I think PNG men are, on average, not really violent.
